Why some foreign asians visiting USA.. need technology to learn english?
It’s not just asians but i’ve seen many asians having one of those electronic translators. My question is, people have learned and survived even when those things didn’t exist. You just need to study a bit and then you can ask , make questions if you don’t understand something. Even make drawings or diagrams to get the point across. Being dependant on a little gadget is weird. I’m studying Japanese too, and if I went to Japan i wouldn’t buy one of those ever. I would ask or figure it out little by little. I don’t know, but i feel these Asians who often carry one of these translators are not going to learn much if they rely on those things.
It’s no different than carrying a dictionary. It doesn’t mean that they are not trying to speak English, but when a message needs to be conveyed clearly, and they do not know the words to say it, electronic translators can help.
Actually, compared to Americans, people in Asia are MUCH more likely to actually try to learn other languages. Americans often think they can travel anywhere and expect everyone in other countries to know English. If you go to Asian countries and see the Americans there, you’ll find them saying “Does anyone here speak English?”
I’d rather have someone approach me with a translator to ask a question than to come up and speak to me in a language I don’t know, just because they THINK I should know it!
